This project was conceived as a gut renovation of a five-story townhouse in New York’s East Village. The existing building is a tenement constructed in the 1890s and is nestled on a narrow lot (12’ 9” x 100’) on a narrow street where New York University residence halls, St. Mark’s Church, and 14th Street exert atmospheric pull. These site conditions posed some uncommon challenges, especially as we planned a two-story addition in the rear and a penthouse at top.
