For this design-build project our work consists of the comprehensive gut renovation and rehabilitation of the 7-story East Village tenement. The original shell was built in the 1890s. Initially we hoped to preserve some of the building’s historical elements. However as demolition proceeded it became evident that many items could not be salvaged. Instead, time was reintroduced by resourceful and clever detailing: antique products were found in building reliquaries throughout the Northeast; old growth pine beams were milled into floors; and artisans were hired for custom tile, copper and plaster work.
