Urban Umbrella USA
Value Engineered for the Mass Market
After developing the Urban Umbrella prototype, Agencie set-out to value engineer the product. The redesign reduced the cost/linear foot to a target value. This allowed for a wider mass market roll-out.
To most New Yorkers, the standard Sidewalk Shed may feel ubiquitous. In fact, New York Department of Buildings data indicate that there are approximately 350miles of it on city sidewalks. The cost-efficient version of the Urban Umbrella has successfully replaced a large percentage of the green sheds.
The design was pared down to reduce the complexity of connections. There are fewer umbrella-like arches, but the four arches maintain the modern, streamlined aesthetics. The design still catches the eyes and casts the gaze upwards, creating a feeling of openness. The led lighting was also adjusted to be in strips vs. panels.
